What is a pubnix?

A public-access Unix system is a computer shared by a community. You usually connect with SSH to learn, build, chat, or publish a website. “Tilde” communities take their name from the ~ in a Unix home directory.

Browse the public pages without an account. Each community sets its own joining rules. “Tor Browser required” identifies onion-only sites.

How listings are checked

A listing represents a shared Unix service with community shell access. Directories, protocol documentation, archived messages and plans for future services are discovery leads, not systems. Aliases and native front doors belong to the same entry; independently administered systems can have separate entries.

Editorial entries carry a review date and joining notes. Automatic entries require the service’s own description, shell-access evidence, and a distinct account-instructions page linked by that service on the same host. They are labelled “automatic · not reviewed”. Uncertain candidates stay out of the system list pending stronger evidence or editorial review.

Discovery follows public Web, Gemini, Gopher, Spartan and Nex links, including HTTP onion sites through Tor. Automatic evidence expires after 14 days and is rechecked regularly. “Evidence fetched” means when a page was retrieved, not when it was written. Neither that date nor a working website proves that SSH is available or applications are open.

Communities can request additions, corrections, reclassification or removal at hello@braigetori.org. Please include the official address and a supporting link. Suggestions are reviewed before editorial changes.
